Topic outline

  • ISAS 2025

The International Symposium on ASEAN Studies (or ISAS) 2025, with the theme “ISAS2025: Fostering Collaboration and Embracing Innovation for a Sustainable Future”, seeks to explore and interrogate various possibilities and strategies that can advance ASEAN Studies and contribute to the broader goal of realizing the vision of the ASEAN Community. The conference, organized under the Faculty of Management and Development Studies (FMDS) of UPOU, aims to provide a forum for academics, policymakers, stakeholders, and ASEAN researchers. ISAS 2025 will be held on 25 February 2025 in hybrid format at the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) Headquarters in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines.

The inaugural ISAS in 2015 carried the theme “Our ASEAN: Cultivating the Field” and aimed to establish ASEAN Studies as a distinct field, deepen the discourse on ASEANology, and promote a vibrant community of ASEAN scholars. In 2018, ISAS became a pivotal component of ASEANnale, a multifaceted event celebrating the research and creative outputs of higher education students, faculty, and researchers from ASEAN member states. ASEANnale featured the 1st Film and Multimedia Competition and Exhibition alongside the 2nd ISAS. The competition encouraged students to create films and multimedia works that narrated their culture and personal experiences, showcasing the diverse range of human stories across the region. ISAS 2018 complemented this with keynote speeches, panel discussions, and paper presentations aligned with ASEANnale’s theme, “Capturing the Spirit of ASEAN in the Digital Times.”

Building on this rich legacy, ISAS 2025 aims to foster collaboration, embrace innovation, and inspire sustainable solutions for the ASEAN Community.
